New Members

Be sure you have filled out the New Members form!

The Rhode Island Council for the Social Studies (RICSS) is an organization with a clear mission. Simply, we are “advocating for social studies and civics education for all students.” We invite your institution, your organization, your department, your school to join us in our common mission. We now offer, in addition to the current individual memberships, the following:

Departmental / School District K-12 Membership: $130

For an annual fee of $130, every teacher in your district benefits! By joining RICSS under our department membership, all K-12 teachers in your district will receive the latest news on the issues that affect our content area, as well information about professional development opportunities specifically for history and social studies educators. Members also reduced registration rates for the New England Regional Conference (NERC) and will have access to PD opportunities through our New England and National network (NCSS)

High schools that join under our departmental/district plan are automatically enrolled in Rhode Island Model Legislature, our hands-on student-centered civics activity. If your school does not currently send students to Model Legislature, you will need to designate a faculty advisor and we will send them the information to get started. Access to the program is 100% digital and our state coordinators will be happy to answer any questions that they have!

We understand elementary classroom teachers are overloaded with all the preparation and management issues that characterize the elementary school day. Elementary classroom teachers cannot afford financially or time-wise to join each discipline’s advocacy group. By having your entire district join RICSS, elementary teachers will receive all the latest news, professional development opportunities, and reduced rates for the New England Regional Conference (NERC).

Institution/Organization – $130

RICSS not only represents teachers, but all who are concerned with our shared mission of furthering and strengthening history, social studies and civics education.

When your institution/organization becomes a member of RICSS, our voice becomes stronger, reaches more decision-makers, and furthers all the events we so sincerely wish to see expand: Rhode Island Model Legislature, “We the People” competitions, History Day, Geography Fairs, students’ registering to vote, RI Law Day, Mock Trial, Generation Citizen initiatives, and Civics projects, to name just a few. Not only do your members enjoy reduced rates to the New England Regional Conference (NERC) and regularly receive news from NCSS and state and local sources, but also your events and programs reach a wider audience and will be highlighted on our calendar notices.
